Enrolment

  1. A new Mac skipped enrolment and reached the desktop unmanaged. What do you check, in order?

Listen for: Device assignment in Apple Business, the enrolment profile, network access to Apple and the MDM server, re-enrolling without a wipe where possible.

  2. How do you stop users skipping or removing enrolment?

Listen for: Mandatory, non-removable enrolment through Automated Device Enrollment; required enrolment enforced on macOS 14 and later; what happens with devices not in Apple Business.

Policies and Profiles

  1. When would you use a configuration profile, a policy, or a declaration?

Listen for: Settings vs actions vs declarative state; why the choice matters.

  2. Tell me about a smart group that scoped wrongly. What happened?

Listen for: A real story, how they found it and what they changed.

Security

  1. How do you make sure a user can unlock a FileVault-encrypted Mac after enrolment?

Listen for: Secure token, bootstrap token, how the account is created, key escrow.

  2. How would you prove the fleet meets a security baseline?

Listen for: Compliance reporting from inventory, exceptions and how they are handled.

Updates and Apps

  1. How would you roll out a major macOS update to 300 Mac devices?

Listen for: Testing, phased rollout, deadlines and deferrals, communication.

  2. How do you keep apps up to date without repackaging everything by hand?

Listen for: Automated tools such as Installomator, patch reporting, testing.

Scripting and Troubleshooting

  1. Read this short script and tell me what it does and what could go wrong.

Listen for: Use a 10–15 line script from your environment. Listen for edge cases and error handling.

  2. A user says the Mac is slow since a policy ran. How do you investigate?

Listen for: Policy logs, inventory, the device’s own logs; evidence before changes.

Working Style

Listen for: Ownership, communication and what they changed afterwards.

3. Candidate Scorecard
