Hiring at the wrong level is an easy and costly mistake in endpoint roles. A Mac administrator runs what exists; an MDM or endpoint engineer builds and connects platforms across Mac, Windows and mobile; an EUC architect decides where the whole estate should go. Pick the role that matches the problem you need solved, not the title that sounds most senior.
The Three Roles at a Glance
| Mac administrator | MDM / endpoint engineer | EUC architect | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main job | Run and support the Mac estate | Build and integrate device management across platforms | Set the strategy for end user computing |
| Platforms | Mostly Mac, iPhone and iPad devices, often Jamf Pro | Mac, Windows, iOS, Android; Intune, Jamf Pro, Workspace ONE and others | All of them, plus identity, security and the workplace |
| Typical work | Enrolment, policies, updates, app deployment, support escalations | Enrolment design, compliance, conditional access, migrations, automation | Platform choice, architecture, standards, roadmap, mentoring |
| Time horizon | This week and this month | This quarter | The next one to three years |
| Also hired as | Jamf Engineer, Client Platform Engineer, macOS Endpoint Engineer | Intune Engineer, Workspace ONE Engineer, EUC Engineer | Staff Engineer – Mac, Principal Architect – End User Computing, Modern Workplace Architect |
When You Need a Mac Administrator
Hire a Mac administrator when your platform is already in place and you need it run well:
- New starters should get working Mac devices without IT touching them.
- Updates, apps and security settings need steady, careful management.
- Your service desk needs someone to escalate Mac problems to.
If you have a few hundred Mac devices on one management platform, this is usually the right first hire.
When You Need an MDM or Endpoint Engineer
Hire an engineer when the work is about building or connecting systems:
- You manage a mixed fleet and want one approach across Mac, Windows and mobile.
- You are moving from one MDM platform to another.
- Devices need to meet compliance rules before they reach company data (conditional access).
- Manual work needs to become automated enrolment and reporting.
Engineers usually script well and understand identity, because most of their work happens where device management meets sign-in and security.
When You Need an EUC Architect or Staff Engineer
Hire at architect or staff level when the question is “what should we do?”, not “how do we do it?”:
- Choosing or replacing a management platform for the whole organisation.
- Designing how identity, device management and security fit together.
- Setting standards so different teams and regions work the same way.
- Leading and mentoring a team of administrators and engineers.
These roles need design thinking and the ability to explain trade-offs to leaders, as well as deep technical skill.
A Simple Way to Decide
Ask three questions:
- Is the platform already right? If yes, you probably need an administrator. If no, an engineer or architect.
- How many platforms are involved? One points to an administrator; several point to an engineer.
- Is the decision made? If you still need to decide the direction, start with an architect, even on a short contract.
Many organisations combine roles: an architect on contract to set the direction, then an administrator full-time to run it.
Test the Level You Are Hiring For
Whatever you choose, test it. An administrator interview should include hands-on troubleshooting. An engineer interview should include an enrolment or migration design. An architect interview should include a real scenario from your environment and a discussion of the trade-offs. Our How to Hire a Jamf Administrator guide and free Mac Admin Hiring Kit cover the first of these in detail.
